Happy Tuesday! Time for this week’s Top 5 Tuesday.
Top 5 Tuesday was created by Shanah at the Bionic Book Worm and is now hosted by Meeghan at the Meeghan Reads. And this week’s topic is Top 5 Favorite Book Series.
I read a lot of book series, which is probably not a shock given how many fantasy novels I read. And oh boy is it had to pick a favorite of all time of any books/series (I think I would have trouble even if it were a top 50). So I had to set some guidelines for my picks.
First I have only picked series that I have read all the books in the series, I have a few series that I am part way through that think will be joining my list soon once I finish but I had to narrow it down somehow here. I also only picked series that I enjoyed all the books of the series, now I almost always have my favorite books in a series but I wanted to pick titles for this list that I enjoyed all of. I think we have all had the experience of loving the first book in a series and then being disappointed with the sequel. I can think of three series off the top of my head that the first book made it to my short list of favorites but that I just felt so let down by the second (or third in one case) book in the series.
1. Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling
This series just had to be on this list, I have read it more times than any other series, and I doubt I would love books as much as I do now if not for these books. That being said I don’t love 7 as much as the other books but that really is minor, all things considered.
2. The Ruby Red Trilogy by Kerstin Gier
So yes I have re-read this series again this year, for something like the 5th time through, and that is because I adore these books. The magic is so unique, I haven’t found any other book that is quite like it, time travel is not unique but they way this series handles it is so unique. I also just love the characters, they are really so great. These books just make me smile as soon as I pick them up are for that reason are go too books.
3. The Embassy Row Novels by Ally Carter
This series is yet another I have re-read this year and I am so glad I did. They are great summer books with so much fast paced adventure, teen drama with lots of international intrigue, set on the Mediterranean, which just screams summer to me. They mystery is a lot of fun to piece together and I really love the cast of characters.
4. The Inheritance Cycle by Christopher Paolini
I seriously considered putting Lord of the Rings on this list instead of this series, because I love it too and it is the iconic series that has inspired so basically all of the fantasy that has come after it. But I decided to pick this series instead, it is very much in the tradition of Tolkien, but I think I have read this series more frequently and more recently. It is also more approachable, as much as I love Lord of the Rings, boy it is dense and hard to get through some times. The last time I read these books a few years ago I just flew through them, and they are not short books, they really are a great sweeping adventure story.
5. The Millennium Trillogy by Stieg Larsson
I don’t talk that much about these books and they are not exactly the sort of books I read a lot of, but they are just masterpieces (or at least the original trilogy is, I have read the continuing series by David Lagercrantz and they are alright but not up to the originals as far as I am concerned). So yes these books are really dark, but they are really incredible books. The mysteries are masterfully pieced together and the characters, Lizbeth especially, are just so engaging.
Happy Reading Everyone!
